Prof. Dr. med. Alexander Reis attended the Bundesoberstufenrealgymnasium in Bludenz and studied medicine at the University of Innsbruck from 1985 to 1991. During his studies, Reis worked in the transplant team of Prof. Raimund Margreiter, who carried out the first heart transplant in Austria. During this time, Reis developed a unique model of lung transplantation. This brought him a call to McGill University in Montreal, one of the largest centers for lung transplantation at the time.
In 1994 he returned to Europe and continued his surgical training with the cardiac surgeon Prof. Bruno Reichard at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich. From 1995 onwards, Reis specialized at Rainer Sundmacher at the University of Düsseldorf in ophthalmic surgery and ophthalmology and became familiar with the latest techniques in corneal transplantation.
After completing his specialist training in 1999, Reis received the venia legendi in 2001 and became a lecturer at the University of Düsseldorf. In the same year he settled as an ophthalmologist in the Principality of Liechtenstein and operated in the State Hospital in Liechtenstein. In 2002 he performed the first corneal transplantion in Liechtenstein. In 2004 he was accepted by the Albert-Ludwigs University in Freiburg i.B. appointed lecturer and in 2008 received the title of “Associate Professor” of the Medical Faculty of the University of Freiburg.
In addition to his operational activities in Liechtenstein, Reis works as part of his professorship in the eye clinic of the Albert Ludwig University in Freiburg i.B.
